U2 frontman Bono has revealed that he has suffered from glaucoma, a condition which can damage the optic nerve and lead to blindness if left untreated, for around two decades.

Although many assumed that he wears sunglasses all the time because he wants to maintain his rock star image, Bono has explained during a recording of tonight’s Graham Norton Show for BBC1 that they are there to help him with his vision problem.

‘’This is a good place to explain to people that I’ve had glaucoma for the last 20 years. I have good treatments and I am going to be fine. You’re not going to get this out of your head now and you will be saying ‘Ah, poor old blind Bono.’’’

In 2005, Bono told Rolling Stone magazine that he wears dark glasses because his eyes were sensitive to flash lights.

‘’If somebody takes my photograph, I will see the flash for the rest of the day. My right eye swells up. It’s part vanity, it’s part privacy and part sensitivity.’’
