The Fabulous Duchess Of Alba Dies Aged 88

Spain’s eccentric Duchess of Alba, one of Europe’s richest aristocrats, died on Thursday after a short illness. She was 88 years old.

After being rushed to hospital with pneumonia on Sunday night, she was showing signs of recovery. According to The Olive Press, a spokesperson for the duchess’ charitable foundation said her nearest and dearest were worried about her health.

’‘She had suffered a stomach virus a few days earlier but had recovered from it. Now she has pneumonia. At her age, one thing leads to another. She is weak. We are worried because we love her very much.’’

Maria del Rosario Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart was frequently described as the ‘rebel noble’ and was most-loved in her home country. According to the Guinness Book of Records, she was also the world’s most titled person.

The duchess is survived by her husband Alfonzo Diez who is 25 years her junior and six children.  Her wealth, estimated at between €600m and €3.5bn, is expected to be shared among her children.
