13 Most Memorable Ricky Gervais Quotes

Ricky Gervais is probably one of the greatest entertainers and comedians of our time. He’s often criticised for going too far with his jokes, but for him it seems there’s no such thing as “too far”. Here are 13 quotes that might not be classified as too-far ones, but surely made us laugh.

1. Golden Globes 2004

During the Golden Globes ceremony in 2004, The Office won the Best TV Comedy while Ricky collected the Best Comedy Actor Award. During his speech, he said, “I’m not from these parts. I’m from a little place called England – we used to run the world before you lot.” Bitter remark if you ask us.

2. Golden Globes 2011

In 2011, Gervais was the host of the Golden Globes, and during his opening speech he made several sarcastic remarks about many celebrities that were present. However, one of the most memorable was, “It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie Sheen calls it: Breakfast.” We can’t argue with that.

3. Gay Scientologist Joke

When Ricky was talking about I Love You Phillip Morris, he said the movie was about “two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay – so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then”. Many thought the joke went too far, but Gervais added “My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.”

4. Daily Mail Interview

“I have plenty of pet hates. I can’t stand people scraping their plate or slurping their soup. I can’t stand waiting in lines. I hate people talking inanely about the Lord of the Rings. I hate people whistling. But I’m not like this because I’m famous. I’ve always been a grumpy bastard.” Well, self-criticism at its best.
